heysawbones:

mistahgrundy:

here’s a fun thing about making comics you might not know if you’ve never made comics:

You will be 25% less good at art per page than normal

Probably because there’s so much drawing and figures and scenery going on and you probably have a time limit to how long you can work, and sometimes you just don’t see things wrong with a drawing until you walk off for a few days or whatever, so there’s gonna be some weirdo faces, there’s gonna be a big hand, there’s gonna be a perspective fuckup. You WILL forget to color something.

you just have to be kind of ok with that

Thank you. It’s hard to drive this home to bros who still live in “can’t post anything that’s not a masterpiece, every piece must unequivocally assert the best qualities of my work” la-la land.

I used to feel that way! I get it! I still have problems with it. But it’s a real unhealthy mindset, and a GREAT way to never finish anything. Why? Because it’ll never be good enough.

Sometimes you just gotta take the hit and move on. Tell yourself you’ll fix it later if that’s what you gotta do. Shit.

here you go:

lots of periods in one spot/fashion through centuries:

it indeed is western/european centric, I’m sorry for that, but for other cultures I simply don’t have so many references

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done digital art. The pressure sensitivity only started working near the end of this.

Work in Progress

More floraverse goodness! This time it’s the always adorable Pequin. There is still a lot of sculpting, coloring and especially detialing to be done. But I did not want to abandon this blog again.

Maybe one day I’ll post something that isn’t a WIP.

oh my god

Hello there. What's up Your art looks fantastic. I'm currently amateur cartoonist who is self-taught learning to excel at illustration wants to make my own comics with memorable characters. You have any tips for an amateur illustrator?

$

0

1) Stop calling yourself an amateur. If that’s how you view yourself, that’s how other people will view you. You’re a cartoonist. You’re an illustrator.

2) Start making things. Don’t wait. Don’t wait for your art to be ‘good enough’, because as you work and improve, your standards and goals will rise too, and you’ll find yourself waiting your whole life for ‘good enough’. You’re good enough now. Don’t wait. Start making things.

3) Have hobbies. Do more then just draw.

4) Practice. There’s no secret to becoming a better artist. The only thing there is, is practice.

5) What you surround yourself with is what you will become. Put yourself around a lot of media that you’re passionate about. Put yourself around friends who encourage you. Put yourself in a community of support. Get rid of people trying to drag you down.

6) Make a lot of garbage, move on.

7) Follow your passions. They won’t steer you wrong.

8) You don’t need to go to art school to learn art. There are an incredible amount of resources available to you. Art school provides specific communities and opportunities that are an option, not a requirement. If you want to go to art school, go to art school. If you don’t, don’t.

9) Learn how to talk to people, learn how to talk about your work. Get rid of qualifiers that will make people think less of your work. Get rid of, “it’s only ___”

10) Every artist struggles and hates their work and doubts themselves sometimes. You are not alone.

11) Keep negative stuff out of your space. No one wants to work with someone who has nothing but negative things to say. Not every thought needs to be put online.

12) Don’t always draw on the computer. Don’t use ctrl+z for everything. Make mistakes and learn how to work with them. Make art with your hands. Get messy.

13) Practice.

wrenhat:

A button design featuring Orobas from purplekecleon‘s open world webcomic, Floraverse! She and Amdusias are likely my favorite character designs. Sorry, Min. :<

Not very sure if this is something people would be interested in actually buying, but I love drawing her anyway.

I literally just witnessed a tumblr discourse that went “well _____ is a super popular artist, so while I don’t have any dirt on her yet I’m sure I can easily dig some up!”

y’know, just in case people still have any doubts on what 90% of these callouts are actually about

sanquii:

Oops I made some sprites.

Click here for a version scaled threefold (or if you don’t see the animations!)

All these only have three color palettes so they’ll work as sprites on GBC or (with less accurate colors) NES!  They’re also mostly aligned to tiles.

The source of these neat creatures is Floraverse, see the originals by purplekecleon here!

prismplume:

Went fiddling with SketchUp for a few days on this as a little test on 3D modeling. Didn’t put all the little details here, though (see, no doorknobs HAHA). This was rendered with VRay. The original house design came from this page of the Floraverse comic.

Download SketchUp here if you wanna try it out! The software is simple and relatively easy to use, but not packed with other features like Blender, Maya, or 3DS Max

And if you wanna experiment with the original SketchUp model of the house, here’s the link!

Anyway, here it is! Beleth, from Floraverse, by purplekecleon. But uh, the other body. Not the one in the ref I linked.
