Hi PK, I have had a DA account for a very long time but I never took it very seriously or uploaded much at all. Now that I am a sophomore in college chasing art I wanted to apply myself to getting out there more... But I feel like DA may not be the place to do it; it seems like so many good artists go unnoticed there (not saying im one of them). Do you have any advice? (I guess I should also mention I do trad/dig art and mostly character design with some realism)

Stick yourself out there!!! Any way you can, do it.  dA, tumblr, twitter, facebook, pixiv, whatever — any place you can, branch out, post everything, post often about stuff you’re doing and projects you’re working on.  People are much more interested in lots of updates from a person than they are in waiting for 4 months to see a single piece.  The more places your stuff is, the better.  You may get some fluke of someone discovering you on dA, you might not.  It might happen on tumblr instead, or in some gallery show you did, or thanks to some convention you talked to someone at.  It’s just important to put your name out there as much as possible.
